Although these items have the oldest markets in the world, their importance to current cultures is no less than that of the tiny trade communities of ancient civilizations.

Hard and soft commodities are the two main categories into which commodities are frequently divided. Soft commodities are livestock or agricultural products like corn, wheat, coffee, and rubber, while hard commodities are resources like gold, oil, and rubber that must be mined or exploited.
